The big day started early at Xin Ying’s home. Everyone was busy getting ready for the “gatecrash” games. In Singapore, this is a fun tradition where the groom must pass tests to see his bride. The bridesmaids picked out some very interesting snacks for the “four flavors of love.” This represents the sour, sweet, bitter, and spicy parts of marriage.
First, they had a sweet chocolate roll covered in sticky milk. Next, they tried a very bitter young bittergourd. For the sour flavor, they used “Sour Power” candy from the 1990s. Finally, they ate spicy Samyang Chili Ramen to add some heat! Because there was so much running around, Xin Ying wore sneakers with her dress. This was a smart choice for a busy morning.
When Zhang Jie arrived with his friends, the “sisters” (bridesmaids) were ready for them. They asked for many red packets before they would even open the gate! One groomsman joked that they were running out of money before the games even started.
During the games, the men had to bite the sour candy until it was exactly 0.7cm long. They also played a game from the famous show Squid Game. They had to poke a shape out of a Dalgona cookie without breaking it. After that, the groom had to make ten big promises to his bride. Xin Ying teased him from the other room, saying she could not hear him!
For their outdoor photos, the couple rented a cool Volkswagen Kombi van. This vintage van looked amazing in their wedding videography Singapore style shoot. In addition to the tea ceremony, the couple visited their new home for a tradition called 滚床. A young boy rolls or jumps on the new bed to wish the couple a life full of happy children. It was a sweet moment that we were so glad to catch on film.
